All great movies tell stories, and most stories follow a linear narrative. But the journey from screenplay to film is anything but linear. Scenes are shot out of sequence and then edited back into chronological order to become the final story we witness on screen. This is done to accommodate ever-changing shooting schedules, times of day, seasons of the year, locations, and actors’ availability.
To maintain temporal continuity and avoid visuals that fail to link, a Hair Designer takes 4 to 5 photos of the hairstyle for each scene. These Continuity Photographs ensure that the second part of a scene looks like the first part, even if filmed days or weeks apart.
The Continuity Photographs within this collection are a class of their own in that they are three-dimensional in perception. At first glance, you’ll see the celebrity. With a second look, you’ll see their character. After a third viewing, the subject's true personality begins to shine in every subsequent Polaroid: the silly faces shared among friends, the goofy glances on set, and the serene smiles to Bonnie behind the lens that says, “We’re in this together.” The Continuity Photos that lie in this book form the archive of bonds Bonnie created beyond the credits.
Hilary Swank, Betty Davis, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, and Hugh Grant are just some of the hundreds of actors whose tresses Bonnie Clevering has trussed in locations around the world during her nearly five-decade career.
Hello, Dolly!, RoboCop, Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich, Office Space, The Twilight Saga, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and over 120 more films and TV series comprise her resume, which is as extensive as any in Hollywood.
Continuity by Bonnie Clevering is based on her self-discovered philosophy, in which the balance of life is found in the infinite loop orbiting between the positive and the negative. The stories and lessons in this heartfelt, thought-provoking memoir serve as an inspiration to those involved in the movie-making process and anyone looking to indulge their emotions in the struggles, survival, and successes of Bonnie Clevering’s life beyond the credits.
ARCHIVE OF BONDS FORMED
I wouldn’t say I’m a photographer, but I am more of a storyteller, preserving life's fleeting scenes by freezing the personalities that bring each one to life.
After months of production, Continuity Photographs lapse into novelties rather than necessities. One day, I sat down to revisit the archive. By the time all the photos had been pulled and strewn across the floor of my home, we counted over 18,000. Over the next few weeks, we scanned our top choices of over 3,800 photos that now make up the pages of the book. After weeks of reminiscing over them all, the repetitiveness made me realize what happens in every film I work on…
As I sat down with the archive of bonds formed, I also sat down with the wisdom I gained, memories treasured, and silent battles I went through on and off those sets. With this, I discovered my philosophy: continuity—we strive to find balance in this endless dance of sorrows and joys.
These images give an intimate glimpse into the fabulous personalities with whom I have been fortunate enough to share my life beyond the credits for so many years.
